ST. MARTIN PARISH (KLFY) – The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to stay away from the Cypress Island/Prairie Highway area of the parish due to the rising waters there until further notice.

Major Ginny Higgins tells News 10 that the excess traffic causes wakes from the water on the roadway to move further into homes and businesses in the area.

It also creates an additional burden for first responders who are assisting those in need.

The Sheriff’s Office also want to remind residents in the Bayou Vermilion and Bayou Fuselier areas to prepare for the possibility of backwater flooding.

The St. Martin Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is urging residents in the following areas who may be affected by backwater flooding to take preliminary measures now to protect their belongings:

  • Bayou Fuselier Road
  • Arcade Courville Road
  • Cooper Road
  • McVeigh Road
  • Rushing Road
  • Betty Drive
  • Anne Drive
  • Vanessa Drive
  • River Drive
  • Joe Kidder Road
  • Lee Roy Bourque Road
  • Sawmill Hwy.
  • Tilac Road
