The robotics team at St. Michael Catholic School in Crowley is representing Acadiana in an international competition.

The St. Michael School Saintbots are completing a major mission. The group of 7th and 8th graders is using science, technology, engineering and math to build Lego objects that are out of this galaxy.

The robotics program at the school was created about four years ago. After many competitions, the team this year has qualified to compete in the FIRST Lego Leauge Legoland California International Open.

‘Intro Orbit’ is this year’s global challenge. The team is tackling robot building, computer programming and identifying and solving real-world problems affecting human space travel.

Students said they wanted to be a little different with their project, creating a human colony and research station that will float in the atmosphere of Venus.

“So we decided to venture out a little bit and choose Venus. it wasn’t an easy decision to make, but we eventually all came together as a team to make that decision,” said 7th grader Ellie Adams.

The team competes in the FIRST Lego Leauge Legoland California International Open in San Diego this May.
