SUNSET, La (KLFY) – While big box retailers are already feeling the rush, local small businesses are preparing for shoppers this small business Saturday.

The town of Sunset is home to a host of locally owned businesses.

One building on Napoleon Ave. houses three boutiques where the owners are gearing up for a rush of shoppers.

“What we really want is for folks to come out and see what a lot of the small businesses have to offer,” said Barry Guidry, owner of an art gallery called Boho.

Guidry says everyday is like small business Saturday for him and wants to remind people why it’s so important to shop local.

“We want people to not only see what our local artists and crafters can do, but also give those folks the ability to put their stuff out on the market,” said Guidry.

Right next door to Guidry’s business sits ‘The Funky Flea,’ which provides a mixture of antiques, vintage, and local art. Owner, Claudette Simon, says all three shops in the building feed off of one another so when you shop one–you shop all.

“All of us work together to bring people in to let them know what we have to offer in Sunset,” said Simon.

“There really is not a competition,” said Guidry. “We’re all in this together.”

All the owners can also agree that there are great benefits by shopping local.

“When you come in you’re actually speaking to the business owner, you’re not sitting in lines waiting to check out, and we offer very personalized service,” said Pam Gautreau, owner of Water Oak Farms Inc.–where you can find handcrafted bath and body goods.

Gautreau says although their shops are not a part of the mainstream shopping districts they still have a lot to offer.

“We encourage people to come out to the small towns, get out of the traffic, and come make an impact on local business owners,” said Gautreau.

The shop owners say there are always specials going on and will even negotiate prices.
