A student brought an inoperable BB gun to Myrtle Place Elementary School on Wednesday, according to a press release from the Lafayette Parish School Board.
Administrators say they were made aware of the incident and upon investigation found that the student brought the inoperable Airsoft BB gun concealed in a backpack.
Authorities say the gun was confiscated and the unidentiified student was disciplined according to LPSS student behavior guidelines. According to Louisiana Revised Statute 14:95.2, it is illegal for anyone to carry a firearm or dangerous weapon onto school property. A person in violation of the law can face a fine and/or jail time, although it is unclear what the penalties would be for a minor.
“At no time was there a firearm on campus, and no student or faculty member was ever at risk,” according to Administators.
