A suspect was shot and killed by officers after he led deputies on a high-speed chase and fired shots at their vehicles while traveling on the interstate, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Around 2:30 am Saturday morning, a St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a vehicle on Pontchartrain Dr. near Slidell, La. Police said the driver of the vehicle refused to stop, and led St. Tammany deputies on a chase that traveled into Orleans Parish, then back into St. Tammany.
During the pursuit, the driver of the vehicle fired shots at deputies multiple times.
A Louisiana State Police Trooper became involved in the pursuit on the south shore. An officer with Slidell Police was also involved in the pursuit.
As the pursuit led deputies back into St. Tammany, State Police deployed a tire deflation device, which disabled the suspect vehicle near the Gause Blvd. exit on I-10.
According to the sheriff’s office, the driver exited his vehicle holding a semi-automatic handgun. Members of all three agencies involved in the pursuit engaged the suspect by firing their weapons. EMS was called to the scene, but the suspect was pronounced dead.
Police said there was a passenger in the suspect’s vehicle who jumped from the vehicle shortly after the pursuit began. Deputies said they have taken a man into custody who is believed to be the passenger.
