Three people are behind bars accused of making bombs in Opelousas.
Over the weekend, Opelousas Police received a tip about bombs being made and possibly distributed.
Investigators say the bombs were being built at a home in the 900 block of Eddins Street. After further investigation, a live bomb was found at a different location in the city– at a home on the 800 block of Pulford Street.
Police arrested three men: 37-year-old James Moore, 29-year-old Donquarus Taylor, and 31-year-old Darrell Young. They are accused of possesion of and manufacturing a bomb.
After finding the bombs, Louisiana State Police were called to Opelousas to disarm one of the bombs.
“The Emergency Services Unit is the primary agency in Louisiana that would be called in the event of an emergency like this where a device is located and needs to be made safe,” explains Thomas Gossen with LSPD.
Mark Guidry, with Opelousas Police says it was crucial that all the bombs were found and taken off the streets, “This bomb could’ve seriously inflicted some serious bodily injury, up to death. So it was a very dangerous situation as all explosive devises are. Could be catastrophic if used in the wrong hands or at the wrong time.”
Gossen explains how dangerous these particular bombs that were found in opelousas are, “With the sharpnel flying from the bomb, it would be similar to thousands of bullets flying in every direction. So you’re looking at 150 feet of damage caused by something as simple as what was located.”
Guidry adds that investigators do not believe these incidents are terrorism-related.
Having or making bombs is a felony and can carry up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
