Members of the New Iberia Police Department were sworn in Tuesday by Judge John Conery.

The event took place on the steps of City Hall on Main Street with new Police Chief Todd D’Albor at the forefront.

Last fall, voters approved a new sales tax to fund the police department.

It’s been 10 years since New Iberia residents last had a police department and have depended on the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office for city policing.

At 6 a.m. on July 1st the New Iberia Police Department will begin providing Law Enforcement within the City of New Iberia, replacing the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The role of 911 in Iberia Parish will remain unchanged  and residents should still dial 911 for any emergency anywhere in Iberia Parish, New Iberia, Jeanerette, Delcambre or Loreauville and be connected to the correct public safety (Fire, Law Enforcement or Emergency Medical Services) agencies.
