The Department of Parks and Recreation facing million dollar cut

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – The Lafayette Consolidated Government announced it’s proposed budget and this year the Department of Parks and Recreation could be facing a one million dollar budget cut.

Tuesday Mayor-President Joel Robideaux presented the council with his 2016-2917 proposed budget, and the Department of Parks and Recreation is on the chopping block.

Director Gerald Boudreaux said the cuts will not affect regular maintenance or operations.

“It’s going to be on the capitol side and what that means is we won’t have any new projects in this upcoming budget. You won’t see any new playgrounds, you won’t see any big, major improvements to any of our facilities.”

Boudreaux said the one million dollar cut will be difficult but manageable.

“We are able to get by with that. The key is to maintain what we have and hopefully not have any negative impact on our programs or our operational needs.”

This is the largest budget cut the department has experienced, but Boudreaux said he is confident the department will continue to provide the best services possible.

“Yes a million dollars will have an impact on us, but we are optimistic that it won’t negatively impact the programs or the facilities as we continue to move forward.”

The council will discuss the budget cuts to the Department of Parks and Recreation on August 9th.
