LAFAYETTE, La (KLFY) – Finding ways to deal with overcrowding at Lafayette High School, a Lafayette Parish School Board committee discussed that issue Tuesday night. They’re also seeking input from the public.

Members of the parish school board’s Joint Finance and Facilities Committee are looking at several possible options to address the issue.

The board got input on the idea of regulating enrollment by reducing the number of students taken into the academy of health careers and performing arts.

“Alot of these programs are filled because they don’t have any room for the students, but if we look at other opportunities to move programs around then we’ll have more opportunities for students to enroll in those programs,” said school board member, Mary Morrison.

Morrison said the more popular option that parents seem to be open to is the suggestion of moving one of the academies to Comeaux High School.

“I really do feel that students and teachers will be able to perform whereever they are if we provide the essential resources for them to do that,” said Morrison.

Lafayette High Junior, Micah Broussard, is in the performing arts academy and said she’s concerned that if the program moves to Comeaux High, she would have to move with it.

“I want to stay at Lafayette High, but if I have to do something else then perform at the arts, that’s going to be a problem,” said Broussard.

The board discussed other options such as redrawing the attendance zone for Lafayette High to about 900 in-zone students. Another proposal was to designate Lafayette High ‘magnet school’ status, with a limited residential attendance zone.

“We haven’t made any decisions upon it, but the reason why we’re looking at this is to provide opportunity for our students,” said Morrison.

Morrison said an option will be chosen in the near future.
