LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Sunday, residents of Acadiana joined at the Blackham Coliseum to celebrate the 30th annual Zydeco Extravaganza.

The first Zydeco Extravaganza was in 1987.

The event draws fans from all over each Memorial Day Weekend and is the largest one day zydeco festival in the world.

“Glad to be back in Blackham Coliseum and that’s the original home of Zydeco Extravaganza,” said organizer Don Cravins, “Thirty years ago in July we started Zydeco Extravaganza. We probably had about half of the crowd that we have here right now.”

Nathan Williams Sr. from Nathan & The Cha Chas, has played at the extravaganza since it began.

“I felt so good just being on stage because I like what I’m doing,” said Williams, “It just feels so good to be here.”

If you ask what has changed the most over the last 30 years musicians and organizers agree it’s the younger generation getting involved.

“Today we have the new generation coming in and we hope that they will fill our shoes and that they will continue this great tradition,” said Cravins.
