July 23, 2015 is a date that many people will never forget. Three years ago, an Alabama man, rushed inside Theatre of the Grand 16 Theatre on Johnston Street and opened gunfire.
The first person who was shot and killed was 21-year-old Mayci Breaux. The Breaux family believes Mayci’s legacy is far greater than this tragedy.
“I feel her everywhere. She’s always around,” said Dondi Breaux. Mayci Breaux’s mother as she reflects on her daughter’s memory. “She loved life that’s for sure,” she said.
Fighting back tears, she said time doesn’t all pain, but the family has found strength through it all. “She’s very missed so badly, but there’s happiness that comes out of her death,” said Breaux.
An overwhelming amount of donations was given to the Breaux family, which inspired Lafayette General Hospital to open a scholarship fund in her name.
“Scholarship funds, particularly in the medical industry, are very important,” said Nancy Broadhurst, Executive Director of the Lafayette General Foundation.
Although Mayci, an aspiring Ultrasound and Radiologic Technologist, didn’t have the chance to live her dreams.. she’s giving many other young women the opportunity to live theirs.
“Last year’s recipient sent us a letter and she made the dean’s list. She wrote us this beautiful letter talking about how important the scholarship program was to her,” said Broadhurst.
“The scholarship fund began with a $100 donation from an anonymous donor in Montana. “We received funds from businesses, and individuals and our own employees,” Broadhurst added.
The scholarship fund has now over $50,000.
“Her being loved and prayed for by so many.. I couldn’t ask for any better,” said Breaux.
Lafayette General Hospital has begun accepting scholarship applications.
