GUEYDAN, La. (KLFY) Gueydan Town officials have issued a voluntary evacuation order because of flooding concerns.
Gueydan Mayor Chris Theriot said Wednesday that floodwaters continue to rise, threatening the community and residents.
He advised residents in the area to take proactive measures and voluntarily evacuate.
“After a gradual rise was detected, contact with the Office of Emergency Preparedness was made to assure all locks, south of Gueydan were open. They were open and a 1-2 feet drop was occurring.
At 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, the water was rising at about ½ inch per couple of hours. Still had enough height at the pump off levee, approx.. 2 to 3 ft.
The Nursing Home was requested to start preparation for possible evacuation if levee would breach.
With locks open, and rising water still occurring it was recommended the Nursing Home start evacuation at approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The levee is STILL HOLDING at approximately 2 ft above breaching. But if you feel the need to leave please do so. For you see the weather and rising water are unpredictable.”
