Tuskegee Airmen Charles Clifford Chenier laid to rest Saturday in Opelousas

Opelousas native Charles Clifford Chenier was laid to rest Saturday during funeral services at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas.

Chenier is most remembered as one of the last surviving “Red Tail” Tuskegee airmen who served in the 332nd fighter group during World War II.

News Ten was there when Chenier attended a premier of George Lucas’ blockbuster “Red Tails” at the Grand Theater in Lafayette in 2012.

He would often say that even while he fought for his own country, he was still in a battle for his own civil rights.

Chenier’s passion was serving his home communities of both Tuskegee and Opelousas.
