FRANKLIN, La. (KLFY)- April Charles had a protective order against the man who shot and killed her this morning.

According to the St. Mary Parish Clerk of Court’s Office, the 36-year-old woman filed for court-ordered protection again Kenneth Smith Jr. in May, which was granted by a district judge on June 1. 

Charles was shot twice this morning in an apartment complex on Ibert Street, Franklin Police said.

Smith, 30, then turned the gun on himself, authorities said.

The two shared one child.

Court records show that Charles has filed a previous protective order again Smith in 2016.
