Daniel Fitzwater, a backup quarterback at ULM, has died.
He was 20 years old.
“The coaching staff and team are deeply saddened by the loss of a great person in Daniel. Our thoughts and prayers are with Daniel’s family,” ULM head coach Todd Berry said in a statement.
Said ULM president Nick Bruno: “The ULM family is saddened to learn of Daniel’s death. Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.”
Fitzwater, a Shreveport native and standout passer at Calvary Baptist, walked on at ULM this spring from Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson, Mississippi. He never saw the field for the Warhawks after a knee injury in fall camp required surgery and sidelined him for the season.
Fitzwater died early Saturday, according to the school. The cause of his death is unknown. He transferred to Louisiana-Monroe before the 2015 season.
“He was an all-American guy,” Calvary head coach John Bachman told the Shreveport Times.
“He was talented, smart as a whip and confident in who he was. He loved his family and loved his teammates. It’s just hard to fathom.”
Fitzwater set records at Calvary in total offense (3,900 yards) and touchdowns (46) during his senior year, earning him All-City and All-District honors.
He is survived by his parents, Mike and Kelli Fitzwater, and two brothers and one sister.
