UPDATE: On Wednesday, September 12, 2018, the Broussard Police Department responded to a vehicle crash where a 2012 Grey Jeep Cherokee was on its side in the ditch. Upon officers’ arrival, no driver or occupants were located.

“Officers canvassed the area searching for possible occupants, but none were located,” the Broussard Police Department said. “Evidence on the vehicle suggested the driver crawled out of the passenger side window and fled the scene.”

Later that morning, officers were dispatched to the railroad tracks near S. Bernard Rd where it was reported that a train struck a pedestrian.  The victim was identified as Ryan Richard, 36, of Youngsville. After further investigation it was determined that he was the owner of the Jeep Cherokee that was involved in the prior crash.  It is unknown as to why he was on the tracks a ways away from the earlier crash, authorities said.

Alcohol involvement is suspected however toxicology results are pending.  Broussard Police and BNSF authorities are conducting a joint investigation to the incident.
