The Unity Seven Group has now come up with a unique way to reach the youth here in Lafayette. Co-founder, Chris Bernard, has now brought local artists together to create a song geared towards reducing violence in the community.

Bernard says, “The main focus for this song is for everybody that’s in the song or have something to do with the song to move forward more and more towards unity and express that on the microphone and let the younger generation know what’s really going on and what really needs to happen.”

He says this song has been months in the making. Each of the six artists on the track are from different neighborhoods within the hub city.

One artist, Carlos O’Brien, known as GLOS, says he wants the youth to see violence is never the answer. “Our people lost man, you know what I’m saying and they’re being misguided. They’re seeing what’s going going on, on TV and taking that to the streets and they want to imitate that not knowing there’s a consequence for everything you do.”

Terrance McCray, known as Slim Chance, is another artist on the song.He has lived in Lafayette most of his life. McCray says he’s tired of seeing so many kids go down the wrong path. “The parks empty nowadays you know what I’m saying. It ain’t nobody hooping no more. When we came up they were shooting basketball and all of that and now they’re teaching them how to be shooters.”

Recording this song is a dream come true for Bernard. “It’s unexplainable. It’s really unexplainable. You guys hear the song, don’t be surprised if it doesn’t touch your heart also.”

Bernard says the song is expected to be completed and released over the next two weeks.
