UPDATE:  Emergency services on scene have confirmed that a live grenade was found late Monday evening in the area of De Jardin Street, in North Lafayette. 

State Police PIO Thomas Gossen says a haz-mat technician is working to render the grenade safe.

He says a military explosive disposal techinican has been called to the scene to perform the detonation. 

KLFY was there when authorities detonated the grenade about 9:30 Monday night.

Lafayette Parish Sheriffs officials say a woman walking with a child discovered the grenade and contacted authorities.

We are told, the MK-2 grenade was used in World War II and replaced the MK-1 used in World War 1.

It was phased out gradually in service beginning with the Korean War.  

The U.S. Navy was one of the last users when it was discontinued in 1969. 

Residents in the area were never in any danger, Gossen said.

ORIGINAL: A State Police bomb squad disposal team is on scene following a call regarding a possible grenade located in a wooded area near Des Jardin Street, in North Lafayette. 

Lafayette Parish Sheriff Officials say the Carencro Fire Department is also assisting as well as other federal authorities.

No additional information was released as the investigation is on-going.
