UPDATE: The northbound and southbound lanes of Johnston Street are now open at Duhon Road.
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Lafayette Firefighters responded to a vehicle fire which was reported to have numerous gasoline containers inside, authorities said.
According to a news release, firefighters responded to the fire in 6000 block of Johnston street at approximately 3:00 p.m.
Alton Trahan said he vehicle was a four-door sedan.
The fire caused both North and sound bound lanes on Johnston Street to be closed while emergency responders worked to extinguish the fire.
The occupant of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital with burn injuries.
Trahan said once the fire was extinguished, officials observed multiple gas containers in the truck, as a precaution Lafayette HazMat and Lafayette Police were called to the scene, according to a news release.
Investigators said they were able to examine the vehicle and after the investigation, the fire was determined to be an accident.
Trahan said the owner of the vehicle was transporting approximately nine five-gallon fuel cans filled with gasoline in his trunk and one fuel can in the back seat.
Officials said the owner was heading out of town and utilizes a special fuel in his vehicle and vapors from the gasoline in the back seat were most likely ignited by a lighter or cigarette.
