(The Daily Advertiser) Feb. 2 started off like any other day for 17 year old Jordan Matthews.

The Rayne teenager was at a local hangout on West Bull Street when the unthinkable happened — he was shot in the head and died instantly.

According to investigators with the Rayne Police Department, a 15-year-old boy was taken into custody in connection with the incident but hadn’t been charged as of press time.

Melissa Kibodeaux, 44, is a close friend of the victim’s family.

She is working with others in the community to raise funds for burial expenses.

A vigil will be held Sunday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pavilion Frog Festival grounds in Rayne.

There is a benefit planned on March 10 at Rhonda’s, 1296 E. Texas Ave., in Rayne.

A Chili Cook-off takes place at 8 a.m. that morning, followed by a “Ride for Jordan” Poker Run at 9.

Other events for the day include a 50/50, live and silent auction, bake sale,  live music and a fun jump for kids.

Registration for the Chili Cook-off is $25. Registration for the Poker Run is $20 for riders; $5 for passengers. Registration and any donations can be dropped off at Rhonda’s or Pier 35, also in Rayne.
