LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)—A man in Lafayette has been arrested and charged with flag desecration after video shows him allegedly burning an American flag near a local business, authorities said.

According to the police report, Lafayette Police arrested Charri Mohamad, On September 22 in the Oil Center.

Police said they responded to a complaint on September 19, that an unknown male was seen on video behind a local business setting an American Flag on fire.

Authorities said video showed the suspect toss a burning American flag near a pile of wood and leave.

Police added that video from another surveillance camera also showed the suspect tear up another American Flag in front of the business before leaving the area.

The fire did not spread and there was no damage the property, according to the arrest report.

“On the following day, the individual actually returned and the store owners and the employees identified him as the one that they saw in the video,” Said Public Information Officier Karl Ratcliff, “[They] contacted us and we had officers go out to the area, identify him, and arrest him at that time. We charged him with a single count of flag desecration and a single count of simple arson.”

Charri Mohamad, 57, was charged with simple arson and flag desecration. His bond was set at $2,500.
