Storms have lined up across eastern Texas this morning, prompting a few warnings. This current line of storms will most likely dissipate through the next few hours, but will reorganize itself across the Texas/Louisiana border area around 10am. High-resolution models continue to track this activity as it works eastward into Acadiana around the Noon hour and through 3-4pm.
Wind shear in the atmosphere is high with winds both turning and increasing with height. However, the window for tornadoes, fortunately, could be shorter across Acadiana, as the main complex overtakes many of the individual storm cells that do manage to form. Isolated tornadoes could be possible within the main line, however, so I’ll be watching for that. According to the latest models, damaging winds look to be the primary risk with this complex, with winds in isolated segments in excess of 60 mph. These winds would be strong enough to knock down some trees and power lines across the area, so it’s important to be weather aware for today.

The greater risk, including tornado risk, will most likely evolve across southeastern LA, southwestern MS, and southern Alabama through the late afternoon and evening hours. The central and eastern portions of Acadiana are under a level 3/5 risk for severe storms through today, but I’d be tempted to put the corridor of higher risk more to the east of Acadiana. This area is also where the threat for stronger tornadoes will be. It’s important not to let the hype cause you to panic when these severe weather events are possible.
