The entire country is preparing for Tuesday’s midterm elections and we want to make sure you are prepared to cast your ballot.
News 10 sat down with the Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court, Louis Perret, to find out exactly what voters can expect and why it’s so important to go out and vote.
“It’s such an integral part of our American democracy. We need the voters to turn out to express their opinion so the elected officials know this is what the people want,” says Perret.
The polls open at 6 am and close at 8 pm on Tuesday. Perret explains there’s a few things you need to remember before you cast your ballot.
To qualify to vote for midterm elections in Louisiana, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be registered to vote.
- Be a Louisiana resident.
- Not be a felon under an order of imprisonment.
If you meet these requirements, you must remember that a photo ID is required to vote. While you can still vote by affidavit, it will take about 10 minutes for you to do so, and will delay your voting.
Although you may be rooting for, or even related to a candidate, it’s important to remember that voters aren’t allowed to wear political paraphernalia for any candidate in the polls.
And lastly, you should be voting in the precinct you registered to vote.
