The phrase “Where the West begins” can be found on several landmarks around the city of Scott.
The city of Scott was founded in 1880.
Records show that’s the same year railroads were built in the city.
“The city of Scott is named after the engineer and his name was Scott. And we have A Beautiful sculpture of him in the council room,” says Scott resident Dorthy Derouen.
In 1907 the city was named after J. B. Scott, then the superintendent of Southern Pacific railroads.
“The reason we got the motto “where the West begins” is because this is where anyone that wanted to go west had to come to Scott to get on the train in Scott,” Derouen says.
The railroad carried goods in and out of Scott, it was a means of transportation and stimulated growth and commerce for the area.
what made Scott was the trade. And we used to have a beautiful depot but of course with things, things change and things get torn down and you know how that goes, Derouen explains.
The impact of the railroads will forever be ingrained in Scott’s history.
