LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – 10-year-old Isley Thibodeaux was killed late last night after the Ford Explorer she was riding in collided with a Jeep Cherokee driven by Albert Sampy.

Lafayette Police said Sampy was traveling south on University Ave. when he crossed the center line and hit the Ford head-on.

Sampy and a passenger, and the driver of the Ford and the 10-year-old girl were taken to a hospital where the child later died.

“I tried my best to get them out the car, but I just couldn’t bust that window because of the tint they had on the window,” said witness, Charlie Moore.

Moore recalls what happened as he and his fiance were one of the first people to arrive on the scene.

“Just witnessing the mother pinned up in that car and then noticing the little girl in the backseat, I knew it was pretty bad, I knew it was bad for the little girl,” said Moore.

Staff and students at St. Bernard Catholic School in Breaux Bridge are remembering Isley, who many refer to as sweet and loving.

“I’m sorry for their lost. Isley was really loving. She was a very good teammate,” said Damyisia Asberry, who played on the soccer team with Isley.

Moore said witnessing the crash is a traumatizing experience that he said he’s still very emotional about.

“Drinking and driving, I think that’s pretty much selfish because you’re actually thinking about yourself when you’re driving out there,” said Moore. “You take an innocent person, not only that, you take a child, and that’s what hurt me the most.”

“I feel like I lost part of me through it all,” said Moore.

Sampy is charged with driving on the right of the roadway, 3rd offense OWI, operating a vehicle while under suspension, vehicle homicide, and vehicular negligent injuring.

The crash remains under investigation.
