BATON ROUGE, La. (KLFY)- Baton Rouge Police Cpl. Shane Totty was killed last week while escorting a funeral when his motorcycle was hit by truck.
Today, he was laid to rest after his service at Healing Place Church.
Totty lost his life on February 1, but today he’s being celebrated as a decorated officer by hundreds of his colleagues from across the country.
From Houston to Florida, law enforcement made their way to Baton Rouge to celebrate the his life.
Captain Alex Montgomery led the pack of Lafayette Sheriff’s deputies to Healing Place Church for the funeral.
“He ware he to pay honor to a fallen brother of the motors, law-enforcement and his family,” Montgomery said.
Sergeant Johnny Estess with the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office said this show of support from the sisters and brothers in arms from different corners of the country shows the unity within their bond.
“It means it’s strong. We’ve got that thin blue line but we supported 110 percent,” he said.
Officer Totty’s death is the first for the department this year, but comes on the heels of the deadly police shooting of two BRPD officers and a sheriff’s deputy in 2016.
“It’s not for the money. It’s basically for the love of our community, to protect our community, our families and make sure that it is safe and order is kept,” Montgomery said.
Estess agreed. “It’s in your blood. You either love it or you don’t and evidently all these officers here love their job,” the sergeant said.
A procession of law enforcement led the caravan to Greenoaks Memorial Park to his final resting place.
Totty is survived by his fiance and his infant daughter.
