BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – A Baton Rouge man faces a murder charge after allegedly giving a synthetic marijuana-filled cigar to two victims.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Officers responded to a possible overdose of a male and female victim at a Motel 6 on 10445 Reiger Road in August 2015. The victims were transported to a local hospital, however, the male victim died while undergoing treatment.

According to an affidavit from the EBRSO, witnesses saw a male, later identified as 20-year-old OJ Bonds, entering the victim’s motel room and leaving with a backpack.

Authorities made contact with Bonds and found an open package of synthetic marijuana, also known as Mojo, on his person. When questioned, Bonds said he offered to trade the victims a Mojo-filled cigar in exchange for a regular one. He continued by saying that both victims inhaled from the Mojo-filled cigar and began foaming at the mouth.

Bonds also admitted to stealing a backpack from the victim’s room as they experienced medical emergencies.

After her recovery, the female victim was able to confirm what Bonds told authorities and picked him out of a photo lineup.

In February 2016, the EBR coroner’s report into the male victim’s cause of death was released, which points to an accidental death caused, in part, by smoking Mojo.
