BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – A motorcycle officer with the Baton Rouge Police Department was killed in a wreck Friday afternoon during a funeral procession, officials with the department confirm.

The incident happened Friday, Feb. 1 around 2:40 p.m. in the 6400 block of Jones Creek Road off Tiger Bend Road. Emergency officials say CPR was performed on scene and the officer was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

BRPD has identified the officer as Cpl. Shane Totty, 31.

BRPD Chief Murphy Paul and EBRSO Sheriff Sid Gautreaux held a joint press conference Friday night after the wreck. They say a toxicology sample was taken from the driver of the truck involved in the wreck and charges are pending as the investigation continues. They also said Totty was shot in the line of duty about a year ago and that the same surgeon who worked on him that night operated on him Friday night as well.

The man accused of shooting Totty in 2018, Eugene Thomas Jr., was in court Wednesday, Jan. 30 for a motions hearing. A continuance was granted. Thomas’ next court date is in May.

Chief Paul said Totty leaves behind a 1-year-old baby.

“One of our bright officers,” Paul said of Totty in the press conference. He says a team of officers will work with Totty’s family to help them process his death.

Sheriff Gautreaux mentioned there is video evidence of the wreck and that it’s being reviewed.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome issued a statement ordering all flags at public buildings in East Baton Rouge Parish be flown at to half-staff until Cpl. Totty is laid to rest.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and fellow officers of Baton Rouge Police Corporal Shane Totty, who lost his life today in the line of duty. Our community mourns Cpl. Totty, one of BRPD’s best and brightest young officers who was wholly dedicated to serving the people of Baton Rouge.

The statement continued, “Every day our men and women in blue put their lives on the line to protect the citizens of this great city. Please keep his family, friends, and fellow officers in your prayers during this extremely difficult time.”
