BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Three law enforcement officers were killed, three were injured and a suspect is dead following a Sunday morning shootout with police. It is unknown at this time whether additional suspects were connected to this shooting.

The shooter has been identified as Gavin Eugene Long of Kansas City, Missouri.

Five of the officers were transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. Three of those have died. Officer Matthew Gerald, 41, and Montrell Jackson, 32, were from the Baton Rouge Police Department. The other was a Brad Garafola, 45.

Many community events have been planned in the wake of this shooting. The events are as follows:

  • St. Thomas More Knights of Columbus 5530 to host “Scriptual Rosary for Peace and Families”every night in the coming week at 6:30 p.m. at the STM Church on Goodwood Blvd.
  • Baton Rouge Press Club hosts “Responding to Mental Health Issues of Our Community in Times of Crisis” at the Belle of Baton Rouge Hotel on 102 France St. on Monday, July 18 at 12 p.m.  
  • Law Enforcement Prayer Service at Cate Square Park located at 200 W Charles St. in Hammond on Monday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m. 
  • The Rock Church on 20810 Plank Rd. will host an hour of prayer on Monday, July 18 at 7 p.m.
  • Candlelight vigil for Matthew Gerald at Healing Place Church on Highland Rd. at 8 p.m. Monday, July 18
  • “Law Enforcement Support” Ride on Tuesday,July 19 at 6 p.m. Bikers will assemble at All Star Lanes Bowling Alley (next to McDonalds on Airline Hwy.) and K.S.U. at 6:30 p.m. enroute to Baton Rouge Police Dept. Headquarters on Airline Hwy. & Goodwood Blvd.
  • House of Prayer Baptist Church located at 4143 Sherwood St. hosts citywide prayer service onTuesday, July 19 at 6 p.m. 
  • New Roads Branch NAACP “All Lives Matter!” Prayer Vigil, Tuesday, July 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Point Coupee Parish Courthouse in New Roads.
  • OneBatonRouge Vigil for Fallen Officers at the LSU Clock Tower, Tuesday, July 19 at 6 p.m.
  • Prayer vigil in Denham Springs at Antique Village on Tuesday, July 19 at 7 p.m.
