CADDO PARISH, La. (KLFY)- State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a house fire in Shreveport that claimed the life of two victims.

Just before 11:30 p.m. on December 26, Caddo Parish Fire District #1 responded to a call for a house fire located in the 5300 block of North Market Street.

Once forcing their way through the front door to extinguish the flames, firefighters located the body of a man at the door, with keys next to his hand, as well as the body of a woman a few feet away.

While official identifications and causes of death are pending an autopsy, the victims are believed to be the homeowners, both in their early 60s. Following an assessment of the scene, deputies determined the fire originated in the home’s living room.

Investigators said the official cause of this fire remains undetermined at this time, however, there are currently no suspicious circumstances under consideration. Deputies said they did find smoke alarms in this home, however, they have been unable to determine whether they were in working order at the time of the fire.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office would like to remind all Louisiana residents of the importance of testing your smoke alarms on a monthly basis and changing the batteries in the devices every six months. If your home does not have smoke alarms, the SFM’s Operation Save-A-Life program partners with local fire departments and districts to provide FREE smoke alarm installations, at any time of the year, for families in need of assistance accessing the critical emergency-alert equipment.

In addition to having working smoke alarms, the SFM also emphasizes the importance of having planned and practiced escape routes for your home that include knowing two ways out of every room. To register for a free smoke alarm, or learn more about Operation Save-A-Life, visit lasfm.org.
