BATON ROUGE, La. (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) – An effort is growing in Louisiana to create a permanent home for a symbol that has called two states home.

The “Spirit of Louisiana” fire truck was built after September 11, 2001, to assist the New York City Fire Department. The department lost 343 firefighters that day, as well as dozens of vehicles.

It served in the Big Apple until August 2005. When Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, the FDNY returned the truck to Louisiana.

The “Spirit” then helped New York one more time, after Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012.

But these days, Louisiana Fire Marshal Butch Browning says the truck’s days of thousand-mile missions are done. He has a campaign going to give the vehicle its own house outside his office.

Browning hopes to raise $400,000, so the vehicle’s new home can rise before the end of the year.
