BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – Former Louisiana Lt. Gov. and Plaquemine judge Robert “Bobby” Freeman died at his home in Plaquemine Monday at the age of 82.

Freeman, of Plaquemine, served as lieutenant governor from 1980 to 1988. He then went on to be the Plaquemine city judge.

Prior to being lieutenant governor, Freeman served in the Louisiana Legislature from 1968 to 1980.

He was a member of the LSU boxing team and served in the US Army.

His family said Freeman died Monday morning after suffering an aneurysm last week.

The Freeman family extends its appreciation for well wishes and support. He is survived by his wife Marianne D. Freeman, two children, granddaughter.

Gov. John Bel Edwards released the following statement regarding Freeman’s passing:

“Donna and I are saddened to learn of the passing of such a dynamic public servant, former Lt. Governor Bobby Freeman. As an attorney, judge, state representative, two-term Lieutenant Governor and an athlete inducted into the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the LSU Boxing Team, Bobby Freeman’s passion for serving the people of Louisiana and his talent were on display in everything he did throughout his life. While he may no longer be with us, the State of Louisiana is a better place because of Lt. Governor Freeman’s work and his legacy will live on for generations. We are keeping his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers during this time of loss.”
