BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – Gov. John Bel Edwards is calling for State Senator Troy Brown to resign after he was arrested a second time for domestic abuse in July.

Brown, 44, was first arrested less than a year ago in New Orleans.

Edwards released the following statement Tuesday afternoon:

“As governor, I take this issue of domestic violence very seriously. I have demonstrated this by my voting record in the legislature and my continued emphasis on this issue since I took office in January. As a state, we should be speaking with one voice against domestic abuse.

“Given the serious allegations against him, I do not believe that Senator Troy Brown can continue to effectively serve his constituents. I would welcome Sen. Brown’s resignation from the Senate, so that he can focus on any issues he may need to resolve for his sake and his family.”

According the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, Brown faces domestic abuse charges after being arrested Sunday, July 17 at his home in Geismar. Officials said that Brown allegedly bit his wife on the forearm during an altercation.

Brown was arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic abuse and was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail before being released on a $5,000 bond.

Brown was first arrested on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015 in the Hyatt Regency hotel on Loyola Avenue in New Orleans.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, Brown allegedly punched a woman in the right eye while she tried to intervene in an argument between Brown and second woman on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015.

After his first arrest in 2015, Brown issued a statement regarding the incident, saying that brain damage from a car accident in the 90’s along with alcohol consumption played a role in his arrest.
