The following is a release from Louisiana State Police
Shortly before 5:00 a.m. on November 22, 2018, Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 385 near Weeks Lane in Calcasieu Parish. The crash took the life of a pedestrian who was walking along the shoulder of the roadway.
The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as 33-year-old Jacob Ryan Hebert of Lafayette was driving a 2005 Mazda Tribute north on LA 385. Hebert struck 13-year-old Kyrin Pete of Lake Charles while he was walking on the shoulder of the highway with two other pedestrians.
Pete was seriously injured and transported to a local hospital where he later died.
Impairment on the part of Hebert is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Hebert was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and DWI.
Toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
Six pedestrians were killed in Calcasieu Parish in crashes investigated by Troop D last year. So far this year, Troop D has investigated 25 fatal crashes resulting in 25 deaths.
