COUSHATTA, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — A mother and son are dead after a late-night duplex fire in Coushatta.

Crews with the Red River Parish Fire District were dispatched to a blaze with entrapment around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of East Carroll St.

Initially, when firefighters tried to search the duplex they were pushed back by flames.

With the assistance of Bienville Parish Ward 4 & 5 along with the Natchitoches Fire Dept. No. 9 crews were able to extinguish the fire after about four hours.

When crews searched the home around 5 a.m. they discovered the bodies of a mother and her 7-year-old son.

The father and a 15-year-old son were able to escape the fire. The man who lived on the other side of the duplex also escaped by jumping out of a window.

State Fire Marshal deputies are investigating the cause of the fire. A family member tells KTAL/KMSS it’s believed the fire was started by a space-heater.
