NEW ORLEANS (WWL-TV) – Thomas Rolfes enjoyed a few hours with old friends at an Uptown bar in the wee hours Saturday. He and his fiancée had arrived in town to look around and pick out a spot for a wedding in their dream city – the place where they both attended college at Tulane – where they met and fell in love.
There are some things known about Rolfes’ night. Police know it started at Ms. Mae’s with friends. Video from the bar shows Rolfes leaving alone around 2:40.
“About ten of us ended up at Ms. Mae’s that night to hang out and see Tom,” said Zach Monroe, a former roommate and fraternity brother of Rolfes.
His phone wasn’t working and he didn’t have access to a car. Almost an hour later he was caught on tape at a gas station convenience store purchasing two bottles of water.
An hour after that more surveillance video shows a man discovering a body near Amelia and South Claiborne. Rolfes’ wallet was missing and he was shot once in the chest. What happened between Ms. Mae’s and the convenience store and what happened after the convenience store is uncertain, puzzling so far to officials and friends.
“I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it,” said Monroe. “I can’t even begin to speculate on how he may have ended up on the other side of town.”
Monroe said friends tried to call Rolfes after he left Ms. Mae’s, but his phone was dead.
Monroe said Rolfes mentioned several times that his fiancée had just gotten in to town and that he needed to get back to her.
Rolfes’ fiancée said the city that had been the couple’s dream, the one place they wanted to celebrate their most special day. Monroe said the entire weekend was based on the love of the place they went to school.
“Tom and Liz both loved New Orleans,” he said. “Just a few hours before all this happened. Tom and I discussed which band they wanted at their wedding, which brass band they could get to play.”
