LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — A north Louisiana prison is preparing to accept inmates from a prison in south Louisiana affected by Hurricane Laura.

The Caddo Correctional Center is preparing for the temporary stay of about 100 state Department of Public Safety and Corrections inmates currently housed at the C. Paul Phelps Correctional Center in Dequincy, Sheriff Steve Prator said.

There’s no word on when the move will occur. The move comes as crews work to restore water and other utilities lost at Phelps as the storm swept through the area.

CCC Cmdr. Rick Farris said the inmates will be quarantined for 14-days to screen for COVID-19 but it is not expected they will remain at the facility for that long. The stay is expected to last about a week, Prator said in a news release.

The remaining inmates from Phelps are going to other facilities around the state.

Meanwhile, Caddo deputies who arrived in Calcasieu Parish on Friday to help with law enforcement have received their assignments. Sgt. Chad Davis said the 11 deputies are relieving Calcasieu Parish sheriff’s deputies and helping secure businesses that have no electricity.

The Caddo Parish deputies have been told to prepare for at least a week’s stay.
