BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) – Southern University reported a suspect is in custody and the campus is no longer on lockdown after a shooting Thursday night that left one person injured.

Officials have not released the suspect’s name. It is believed a 19-year-old man was shot near the law center on the campus around 9:40 p.m. The victim’s name was not released either. Officials added neither the victim nor the suspect is a Southern University student.

The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. His current condition is unknown.

Southern University sent a campus-wide alert around 11 p.m. and the campus was placed on lockdown as police blocked all the entrances. The lockdown was lifted around 6 a.m.

Southern officials urged students and staff to shelter in place overnight.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Southern University Police Department (SUPD) continues to investigate a shooting that occurred on the Southern University Baton Rouge Thursday evening November 17, 2016. SUPD confirmed that a male victim critically injured during a shooting incident was treated on the scene by emergency personnel and was transported to a local hospital. His condition is unknown at this time. SUPD has been working with local law enforcement agencies to locate and apprehend suspects involved in the shooting and report that a black male suspect was taken into custody. SUPD report that neither the victim nor the suspect is a Southern University student. The University, for some time Thursday night, was placed on lockdown. The campus is secure and is no longer on lockdown. The University is committed to providing a safe living and learning environment for its faculty, staff, and students. The University has resumed full operations. All entrances to the campus are open. SUPD is asking the SU community to remain alert and cautious and to report any suspicious activity or any information that may be related to the shooting. No additional details are available at this time. The University will issue updated information as the situation unfolds.
