BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recovered homemade hand grenades in the city of Birmingham.

Wednesday, ATF agents showcased some of the weapons and components used to make the destructive devices. Special Agent David Hyche says the ATF is doing everything possible to keep the dangerous weapons off the streets.

“For us, we want to get the grenades of the street and make people safe and we want to get the manufacturer,” Hyche said.

Last October, two suspects were arrested in Birmingham during a drug case. Officials recovered one hand grenade. Hyche says that case led the ATF to another man in the city they say was running a factory making the homemade devices.

“We know we recovered 24 hand grenades that were in the process of being manufactured. We know that hand grenades have been sold in the city of Birmingham to an illegal alien drug trafficker. So if they will be sold to that guy they will be sold to anybody,” Hyche said.

ATF officials say it is a federal offense to manufacture these weapons. You can go to prison for 10 years for possession, selling and manufacturing grenades.

“I assure you both us and the United States Attorney’s Office and our partners at Birmingham DEA and Police Department will do everything we can to make sure we get the maximum sentence for anybody who possess these, selling these, especially manufacturing.”

According to the ATF, there have been no cases of anyone detonating grenades in Birmingham. Authorities also recovered three homemade machine guns.

Officials expect to make more arrests. The ATF is asking if residents have seen any grenades to not touch them. Instead, call local police or the ATF.
