LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – According to Thursday’s filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, General Motors Co. and Ford Motors Co. each recalled roughly 1.9 million vehicles to replace airbags, adding to the already millions of vehicles facing the issue.
Auto makers over the past week recalled more than 16 million vehicles.
According to the notice the parts needed to fix the issues are currently not available.
“When the air bag is inflated it can cause shrapnel to be exploded through the airbag and can injure the occupants in the car,” said President and Owner of Giles Automotive, Bob Giles.
The recalls are being carried out in stages, and U.S. officials are prioritizing states with hot and humid climates.
Long term exposure to high heat and humidity can cause the air bags to fail or explode.
“The reason it’s more important in our area is because the propellant in the inflators degrades over time from the humidity that we have in our area,” said Giles.
This is the largest vehicle recall in history.
“Cars need different things it’s not one thing in particular for each car,” said Giles Automotive’s Fixed Operations Director Wade Vincent
Overall, nearly 70 million air bags are being recalled in the U.S. alone.
Additional recalls are expected in the future.
