RIO COMMUNITIES, N.M. (KRQE) – A New Mexico couple said a woman posing as an Animal Humane employee stole one of their dogs.

“Don’t leave them wandering around by themselves because this lady will take them,” said Leandra Quevedo. “Keep your dogs inside. Keep your dogs close.”

Leandra Quevedo and her husband Angelo Quevedo recently put a few of their dogs for sale on Craigslist after they moved into a home that won’t allow them to have more than two pets.

They said a woman came to their home after seeing their advertisement, bought a couple of their animals and left.

The Quevedo’s said the same woman came back to their house a few hours later saying that she was with the Humane Society of the United States.

“She gave us these papers here,” said Angelo Quevedo.

The papers explain that the Humane Society of the United States is in the process of charging the Quevedos with more than 70 counts of animal neglect. Some of the charges include failure to feed, shelter and vaccinate 11 animals.

Angelo said the impostor then told the couple that they were required to give her their remaining dog.

“If we didn’t give her our dogs within 10 days she is going to take us to jail or something,” said Angelo.

The couple said the woman then stole a dog from them and drove off.

According to a Valencia County Sheriff’s report, the paperwork the couple claims the woman gave them is likely fake.

The Valencia County Animal Shelter is now putting out a warning of their own.

“Here at Valencia Animal Control you will not be contacted by one of our officers demanding that you surrender animals,” said Valencia County Animal Shelter Supervisor Patty Mugan.

Mugan said if officers show up at someone’s home they will be in uniform and driving a Valencia County Animial Control vehicle.

KRQE News 13 reached out to the Humane Society of the United States. They said they are looking into this case.

According to nmcourts.gov, the Quevedo’s are not facing any animal cruelty charges.
