NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) It’s the first day of August and it’s also the last few weeks before students start to head back to school. You’ll see retailers rolling out their back-to-school deals this month, there’s just a few items you may want to pass on. It’s the last month before students of all ages head back to school and retailers are gearing up.

Expect the essentials, backpacks and pens, to be on sale everywhere. Laptop computers will also to be a great deal this month although some you may want to wait on. Apple for example, expected to roll out new models, possibly a new iPhone in September and they’ll likely drop prices on their older devices.

“In this day and age with technology and how quickly it evolves, last years model may be just as good as the previous years model, and could be found at quite a discount, so, I think it may be a great opportunity to buy electronics that are just a year old,” said Ridgeline Financial Advisor Matthew Carbray.

It’s also a great time to buy summer clothes, that can often be worn well into the school year. Fall clothes will be marked down closer to winter. Also consider getting anything outdoors this month.

“Some of the other items like grills, outdoor items, I think it’s a good environment to be buying them too, because we are further into the summer grilling season,” Carbray said.

Experts say August is not the time to buy toys or TV’s. The price on those will start coming down in the fall as we get closer to Football season and the holidays.

Something else to keep in mind, Labor Day is around the corner so if you need a new mattress, or appliance. Try to hold off, you may be able to stretch your dollar a little further on those items in September.
