CAMERON, La. (KLFY) – One of the two young men who were rescued this morning off the coast of Cameron Parish has died, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife Fisheries.
Adam Einck, the department’s public information officer, said Derek Romero, 19, of Iberia Parish was pronounced dead early this afternoon at South Cameron Hospital.
The other young man, Shane Marin, 19, of St. Martin Parish, is currently listed in stable condition at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Andy Kendrick said the two teens were found around 9:30 a.m. near an oil rig about 11 miles southwest of Joseph’s Habor on the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge.
The two men launched their small boat from the harbor early Tuesday morning.
Family members contacted authorities last night when the two men did not return from their fishing trip.
