OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) – Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted the Opelousas Police Department early Wednesday morning as they attempted to round up more than 20 offenders wanted on warrants issued during undercover operations.

“This is not going to be tolerated in Opelousas,” OPD’s Public Information Officer Chad Leger told KLFY. “The drug activity is going to stop.”

The police department is cleaning the streets through an operation targeting drug trafficking in the city of Opelousas.

“It’s due to the police department having a zero tolerance for this drug trafficking in Opelousas,” Leger said.

Louisiana State Police and the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office are just a few of the agencies that assisted in the joint effort.

“We named this operation ‘Spring Cleaning.’ We are effectively executing several outstanding warrants for different drug charges on individuals here in the city of Opelousas,” Leger said.

The warrants were issued for various drug violations ranging from illegal possession of prescription drugs to distribution of crack cocaine, which was the most common violation.

“We might not get them this morning, but we will pick them up,” Leger said.

Three of the offenders were already in police custody on unrelated charges and law enforcement arrested seven more during Wednesday morning’s roundup.

The warrants were a result of several months of undercover investigations and Leger said Wednesday’s roundup was just one of several roundups planned for the future.
