More than 16 inches of rain has fallen in the Shreveport and Bossier area.

75 volunteers from the 256th Infantry Brigade based out of Lafayette along with full-time staff and other partners of the Nation Guard are helping in the flooded areas.

Major Hargrave, the Operations Officer for the 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team says the area they monitor is from I49 from Shreveport through Alexandria to Lafayette and then I10 eastward.

Because of gusty winds, helicopters were not used for aerial searches for flood victims. Instead, high water rescue vehicles and boat teams were sent out to the flood waters.

Major Hargrave tells KLFY’s Brooke Silverang that their unit has rescued 150 people, 70 dogs, 12 chickens, and one guinea pig in the Shreveport-Bossier area.

The National Guard is working with local and state partners like Wildlife and Fisheries, as well as several emergency operations centers in Northwest Louisiana.
