As the scene in Waco, Texas began to calm down, News 10 took a look at our own local bikers.

Bikers across Acadiana said they’re constantly giving back to the community to help those in need. They feel the shootout in Texas is not a true representation of what they are all about.

“We actually do support MDA annually. We do support Autism Society and our ladies of the harley group support the Miles Perret Society,” says Melissa Gauthier, Cajun Harley Owners Group Chapter.

She says local bikers are always finding ways of giving back.

Down “N” Dirty Member, Abraham Rubin, says they are even there to help one another. “If I make a phone call, they say “OK what do you need?” They all come out in droves.” His chapter’s biggest fundraiser is an annual Easter egg hunt for children in the community. Rubin says bikers in this area are like extended family and it is heartbreaking to see what happened in Texas.

Another biker, Amanda Simmons, agrees. “We enjoy one another, we fellowship with one another, we are regular citizens who work daily and just have an enjoyment of riding bikes especially to help the communities.” Simmons’ son died six years ago in a motorcycle accident. She says this motivated her to teach motorcycle safety classes.”We implement CPR courses. We try to educate the public as well as to watch out for motorcycles because we are on the highways just as they are so we just do various things around the communities that are very positive.”

Local bikers say they will continue to work together to make the community a better place.

Cajun Harley Davidson will host a concert Friday to support the Wounded Warriors Project. Blaine Roy will kick of the festivities at 5:30 p.m.
