LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – If you typically travel across the Vermilion River bridges on Ambassador Caffery and W. Pinhook Rd., then come Sunday morning you just may want to find an alternate route.
“Ambassador Caffery, them closing it down, that’s crazy. Traffic is already crazy, so that’s going to be hard for a lot of people,” said Lafayette resident, Jabbarr Thomas.
You can possibly expect some delays as DOTD closes the Pinhook Bridge from 7:00-9:30 a.m. and the Ambassador Caffery Bridge from 8:30-11:00 a.m. Both bridges are scheduled to close for routine maintenance work.
“It is required that we grease basically the movable aspects of the bridge so that they can continue to open and close with ease,” said DOTD’s Public Information Officer, Deidra Druilhet. “This all plays a role in making sure that we’re keeping the bridges safe for the traveling public.”
Druilhet said they picked Sunday to do the work because it’s a day the bridges are less traveled, but residents who travel the bridges everyday are concerned.
“It’s going to be very chaotic,” said Lafayette resident, Kevin Oliver. “There’s a lot of traffic daily, lunch rush, 5 o’clock rush, it’s going to be a real inconvenience to people.”
“Lunch time, breakfast time, it’s packed,” said Thomas.
“With them closing the bridge it’s going to be even crazier,” said Oliver.
Druilhet expects there could be some slight delays.
“We do of course encourage motorist to plan their commutes early on,” said Druilhet.
Druilhet said the bridges will periodically open to clear traffic during the scheduled maintenance times.
