UPDATE:  Lafayette Police have made three arrests in connection with the shooting near the DMV office Monday afternoon.  Police say 21 yo Dondre Francis, of Lafayette and 22 yo Edward Antoine of Lafayette were arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault and Armed Robbery.  Additionally, 23 yo Joshua Sonnier of Lafayette was arrested for Conspiracy to Possess Marijuana and was released on a misdemeanor Summons. According to Corporal Paul Mouton, the investigation remains ongoing.

A stray bullet went through the I-49 location of the Department of Motor Vehicle Office after gunfire broke out Monday afternoon at a nearby apartment complex, police said.

The Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Unit, which shares office space with Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles on the I-49 Frontage Road, told investigators that a stray bullet had entered the DMV building and they responded to a nearby apartment complex.  Fire Marshals, assisted by the Louisiana State Police, had detained several potential suspects and witnesses when Lafayette Police arrived on scene.

According to investigators, the victim was traveling in a vehicle near the intersection of Vaucluse Drive and Loire Avenue, when he stopped to talk with the two suspects.  One of the suspects produced a handgun at which time the victim sped away.  Multiple shots were fired at the victim with one of the rounds striking the DMV building.  Investigators continue to interview witnesses and currently have two suspects detained in connection with the shooting.  There were no injuries reported at the time of the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.

There were employees inside the DMV when the bullet hit, but no injuries were reported.  Police are encouraging anyone with information about the shooting to call Lafayette Police or Crime Stoppers at 232-TIPS.
