Chastant Brothers presents your Lawn and Garden.
Today on your lawn and garden we’re talking about compost for your yard and your garden, but first of all, what is compost?
Compost is a mixture of different things. This compost has mushroom soil, chicken manure, river sand, cotton seed meal, a good mix a good pH. I’m checking the pH right now and it shows right at a seven. You want to be between a six and a seven. Mostly for gardens, lawns can be a little less. If you have some leveling to do in your lawn, compost works well. Vegetable garden, I get it bulk in trucks, we’ll dump it on your property, you can plant directly in it, there’s no burning. I still add a little 5-20-20 fertilizer, but it is rich soil. You can use it in potted plants, vegetables in pots or flowers, flowerbeds, you can fill them up with it.
Come to the store we’ll load up your truck with a big scoop, it’s not that expensive and does a great job. It has all the nutrients your plants need and t is a looser soil so your root system grows rapidly through it. It’s not packed like your regular soil that you may have in the garden. That’s why people would add peat moss and different things to the garden to keep it loose. It’s always easy to work, I’ve been using it for years and I have to add some every once in a while, but I can put a shovel in very easily. You can’t use it in place of fertilizer, if you want a bigger jump start I’d still use fertilizer.
