It was a packed house at the Lafayette City Parish Council meeting onTuesday.
LCG Council Chairman Kenneth Bourdreaux says over 100 people submitted comment cards, all of them wanting to weigh-in on the issue of the monument of Confederate General Alfred Mouton.
Longtime Lafayette resident Greg Davis was at the meeting. Davis says it was a lively discussion that went well.
“A wonderful discussion and lots of strong opnions on both sides. The purpose of that was that our council heard the views of our community. I wanted to make sure they heard there were peoople in our community that thought the monument should be moved to a museum,” says Davis.
The topic came up during another LCG Council meeting last week, even though it wasn’t on the agenda. “You have that injuction that lawyers spoke about last night. That’s going to have some bearing on this. so we’re going to wait and see what happens,” notes Davis.
Councilman Boudreaux says he put the item on Tuesday’s agenda because it needs to be discussed. “There was a lot of confunsion initially about what we were doing. We were having a discussion item. We were talking about possible considerations. What options are available; from that perspective I think it went well.”
Boudreaux says the council received over 120 public comment cards from people wanting to speak.
The idea of using the space to honor public figures came up such as Zydeco legend Clifton Chenier. “This is about a single issue right now.
At the end of the day we need to find out what’s best for this, then we move on. If we want to start honoring other people and doing other things, then we look at those things at the appropriate time,” adds Boudreaux.
